The Hide Safari Camp Information

Weather & Climate

Hwange lies on the edge of the Kalahari which makes it subject to great extremes in temperature. Between December and March/April we experience a hot wet summer when temperatures will generally range from 25-38oC. Rainfall is on average between 570-650 mm per annum. June and July are the cool, dry winter months. Days are normally pleasant, sunny and warm (around the mid-20s) but at night the temperature can plummet to freezing. The month of May can be a bit mixed, as can November. October tends to be the hottest time of year with temperatures sometimes exceeding 40 degree celcius.

By air: International flights from Johannesburg land daily at Victoria Falls Airport, from which Hwange is only a 2 hour drive away, followed by a leisurely 1 hour game drive. By road: Road transfers can be arranged from both Victoria Falls and Hwange Main Camp. It is also possible for guests to self-drive to the camp in a 4x4 vehicle. Maps are available if required.

Great Safari Ideas

It is possible to include Hwange in safaris to Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana. Depending on what you are after, you might want to combine it with walking and canoeing in Mana Pools National Park or with a cultural and wildlife experience in Matobo National Park.  Hwange is also great as part of safaris to the Okavango Delta in Botswana and the Lower Zambezi, South Luangwa or Kafue National Parks in Zambia. Travel advice

Travelling to Africa is all about comfort so we recommend that you choose well-fitting practical clothing that will protect you from the sun and chilly nights. Try and avoid synthetics unless they are designed for the outdoors and don’t go overboard with fancy stuff. During the day you’ll be out driving or walking, so pack comfy tops, light trousers or shorts, and a warm fleece or jumper. A hat is essential, as are comfortable and reasonably sturdy shoes for walking in – something that will keep the thorns and sand out and protect you from the odd nasty. In the evenings it’s sometimes nice to dress up a little but leave the tux and cocktail dress behind.

It is always a good idea to have a decent pair of binoculars (something around the 10x40 range is ideal) or you might find yourself missing out on the action. A camera with a good zoom will also come in handy. Little digital cameras are fine for landscapes and happy-snaps but if you want that picture of a zebra’s eyelashes, then go for something more powerful.

It is not a bad idea to have a small medical kit but don’t go overboard. Plasters, some aspirin, antihistamine and something for dodgy tummies can come in handy. The Hide is a low risk malaria area, however because you will more than likely be travelling through areas that are high risk, we recommend you consult your doctor for a suitable prophylactic. High factor sunscreen is essential.

The Hide has bird and animal books for your reference but if you’d like a good novel then please bring your own. You may want to swap it for another soft cover in our library.
