Latest News & Sightings from Barry, Camp Manager
& Pro Guide
The weather continues to be hot, with the rains yet
to arrive. The pumped pans are under immense pressure
from Elephants and Buffalo especially with the pan in
front of the Hide being reduced by half in just five
days! We have at least 600 to 1000 Elephants drinking
at the Camp everyday, along with huge herds of Buffalo
and all other species. Lion are being seen every few
days by the guests who sit up late, watching this amazing
spectacle. On one occasion, a buffalo bull was chased
into the pan by three male Lions, and was all but done
for, when it was saved by a herd of Elephants that chased
the lions away. The Lions returned to the pan later,
and then took off after a Giraffe, which had thought
it was safe to sneak a drink.
The underground hide has proved immensely popular the
afternoons. It truly is a remarkable experience to have
hundreds of Elephants and Buffalo along with all the
other game, just feet away from you. An added bonus
is watching the elephants rolling in the pan, bathing
away the summer heat. The cacophony of noises, smells
and close encounters are truly an opportunity of a lifetime.
Sadly, Hyenas recently attacked one of the Painted
Hunting Dogs' dens and all the pups were killed. In
an attempt to save them, a few adults were also injured,
and two have since died from their injuries - a real
loss. However they were seen on an Impala kill at Ngweshla
only yesterday.
We now have five different Rhino, which frequent the
area: Two bulls are often seen from the Camp, and drink
at the Hide pan. The elusive Gemsbok were seen twice
in the last few weeks, which is a real treat for discerning
game viewers as well as Roan which are also being seen
almost daily. A frequent guest to The Hide, Pat Kelly,
and myself were lucky enough to sit and photograph a
baby Hyena, just a few weeks old, for a number of hours.
It really was hugely entertaining watching him play
with the adults, and try and catch insects.
Good doses of Sable, Kudu, Zebra, Giraffe, Warthog,
Waterbuck, Wildebeest and Impala are drinking daily
at the camp's waterhole during the day. Although the
hot, dry conditions are great for game viewing, it will
be a welcomed relief to get a few thundershowers, to
help fill the pans and settle the dust.
Return Guests - We were honoured to have the
Molnar's from Germany for their 10th safari, as well
as Colin Campbell for at least his 10th as well - great
to know our loyal clients always feel it's worth coming
back!
Did You Know? - Air Zimbabwe has re-launched
the Vic Falls/Johannesburg/Vic Falls flights initially
will be running 3 days a week.
